LIBRARY
As a branch of the University of Cape Town Libraries system, the Built Environment Library (BEL), located in the Centlivres Building, has a significant majority of the system's print holdings in the fields specifically of architecture, urban design, city and regional planning, landscape architecture, construction economics and management, and certain related fields, together comprising some 16 000 shelved books and monographs, as well as slide, audiotape, videotape and DVD collections. The BEL also holds 163 journal titles in these fields and a range of building material specification catalogues and databases.
During the academic terms, the BEL is open
08h30-18h00 (Mondays-Thursdays),
08h30-17h00 (Fridays), and
09h00-13h00 (Saturdays).
It is permanently staffed by the Librarian-in-Charge; a senior library assistant, a departmental assistant (shelver), and four part-time student assistants.
A range of maps of Cape Town and its regional hinterland are available at various scales in print format through the City and Regional Planning Programme's map cabinets, and in digital format through the Digital Map Library overseen by staff of the BEL.
A useful further source of information is the UCT Libraries website (www.lib.uct.ac.za), which offers an interactive perspective on the operation of the system as a whole, including the BEL, as well as providing a link to the electronic catalogue and electronic journal holdings.
